Pacific Coast Terminals Recognized for Outstanding Environmental Stewardship
On July 21, 2005, Pacific Coast Terminal Co. Ltd (PCT) was recognized by the City of Port Moody for an important environmental initiative. PCT was presented with the City of Port Moody’s 2004 Environmental Award for their progressive water recycling program.
“PCT is honoured to receive this prestigious environmental award from the City of Port Moody,” said Ken Catton, VP and General Manager of PCT. “PCT is committed to both environmental stewardship, and making a positive impact in the community of Port Moody.”
PCT’s water recycling program works by redistributing rainwater that has collected on the site to the various areas of the facility that require water for dust suppression and clean-up. Rainwater is collected through a series of pumps and ponds where the water is treated, stored in tanks, and then pumped into a new distribution piping system for reuse on the PCT site.
“The Port Moody Council is proud to recognize PCT for its outstanding example of corporate citizenship and leadership in the area of environmental sustainability,” said Port Moody City Councillor Bob Elliott, Chair of the Environmental Protection Committee. “Through its water recycling program, PCT has significantly cut down on the amount of water used at the facility, which will directly benefit all residents of Port Moody.”
Thanks to the water recycling program, PCT has reduced the amount of water it discharges to the Port Moody sewer system by more than 50 per cent and reduced PCT’s water consumption by more than 60 per cent each year. This frees up drinking water for more than 2,500 Port Moody residents, and leaves enough space in regional sewer systems and wastewater treatment plants for more than 1,000 households.
